Print Media Basics

The print media relates to newspapers, magazines, periodicals, comics, leaflets, flyers and other paper based advertising materials.
A newspaper is a written publication containing news, information and advertising.
Newspapers are most often published on a daily or weekly basis.
Despite recent setbacks in circulation and profits, newspapers are still the most iconic outlet for news and other types of written journalism.
In the UK we refer to newspapers as either tabloid or broadsheet.
Features a newspaper may include are:
  1. Weather news and forecasts
  2. An advice column
  3. Critic reviews of movies, plays, restaurants, etc.
  4. Editorial opinions
  5. A gossip column
  6. Comic strips and other entertainment, such as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes
  7. A sports column or section
  8. A humor column or section
  9. A food column
  10. Classified ads are commonly seen in local or small newspapers.
Tabloids or “Red Tops”
A tabloid refers to a smaller newspaper format that tends to emphasize sensational crime stories, gossip columns repeating scandalous innuendos about the personal lives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk food news“.
Broadsheets
Larger newspapers, traditionally associated with 'higher-quality' journalism, are called broadsheets though several British 'quality' papers have recently adopted the tabloid format.
Other Newspaper Formats
Another UK newspaper format is the Berliner, which is sized between the tabloid and the broadsheet and has been adopted by The Guardian and its sister paper The Observer.
Magazines
Magazines, periodicals or serials are publications, generally published on a regular schedule, containing a variety of articles, generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, or both.
Typically, magazines are published weekly, biweekly, monthly, bimonthly or quarterly.
Magazines fall into two broad categories: consumer magazines and business magazines.
Advertising is also an important source of revenue for business magazines.
Magazines can be grouped into various genres and generally have a distinct target audience.
  Some popular genres include;
1.       Sports
2.      Womens Interests
3.      Hobbies
4.      Art
5.      Trade

Comics
Comics are a graphic medium in which images are utilised in order to convey a sequential narrative.
Devices such as speech balloons and boxes are used to indicate dialogue and impart establishing information, while panels, layout, gutters and zip ribbons can help indicate the flow of the story.
